Practical Periodontics: Staging and Grading Made Simple and Nutritional Strategies for Inflammation Control

Timothy G. Donley DDS MSD

8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Friday, October 17, 2025

The Terrace
ULM Library 7th Floor

Sponsored by the Northeast Louisiana Dental Association

This course will focus on two topics:

TOPIC 1: Staging and grading are great if you have plenty of time. This course will cover what to do if you don't have time. It doesn't have to be confusing. The world of periodontics can't seem to get out of its own way. Every classification system to date has been strong on complexity but weak on applicability...until now. In this course, you will master a chairside, evidence-based approach to identify exactly which patients and sites to treat. Unlike staging and grading, you will also learn a decision tree to make clinical treatment decisions. The emphasis is on making a complicated system much easier and more useful.

OBJECTIVES

  1. Learn what makes some patients "priority patients" and develop a chairside approach to identify and motivate them.
  2. Learn which sites need treatment (not all of them do!).
  3. Develop a chairside approach for determining how to treat.
  4. Understand the new goals of debridement and how to reach them consistently!

TOPIC 2: Reducing periodontal inflammation through nutrition: Macro nutritional recommendations that can make a difference. Maximally effective periodontal therapy is about much more than just cleaning teeth. Yes, bacteria initiate periodontal disease, but it's the host's inflammatory response that adversely affects oral and overall health. Now, ample evidence (which will be reviewed during this course) demonstrates the role that nutrition plays in affecting the host response.

OBJECTIVES

You will learn

  1. The role that inflammation plays in periodontal pathogenesis,
  2. The evidence for nutritional intervention to reduce periodontal inflammation,
  3. How to effectively reduce oxidative stress via alteration in
    1. Processed sugar intake,
    2. Antioxidant intake,
    3. Fat intake,
  4. Real-world strategies your patients can use to reduce their inflammatory burden, and
  5. Easy nutritional assessment tools that will work in a busy practice.
